Over the years Art Space has held a good few mixed Exhibitions, around Portsmouth some with themes some not. Many of these shows have been under the auspices of the Portsmouth City Arts office, led by Chris Carol. Latterly we have had exhibitions in the historic dockyard, the City Museum and Records Office and most recently in the Space gallery at Portsmouth University.
But a recurring need of Art Space artists is to push their work out into a wider world beyond Portsea Island. The management of the group has always been aware of this need and has developed exhibitions in Havant, Winchester, London and Caen in France.
The group show ethos does not always sit easily with individualistic artists, but having been part of a good many of these exhibitions, I feel there is a great value in seeing how other artists go about bringing work together and selecting it to show, that and the interaction in presentation and explanation of the aims of a given show. Above all, these group shows, put our collective reputations on the line and they enhance the profile of Art Space Portsmouth the organization.
