"This exhibition shows that there is a diversity of quality work being made in Portsmouth by artists who live and work here and who enrich the cultural life of the city by doing so. Art Space is an inspiring artist-run organisation that provides essential workspace to artists in a region where an affordable and conducive environment for making art is very difficult to find. Studio space is not the only issue for artists in the South East of England, which is the largest region surrounding the irresistible presence of London. It is imperative for all artists who wish to develop their careers to have opportunities for their work to be seen on a local, national and international level. Art Space provides an essential platform for members' work by organising exhibitions such as this and by programming exhibitions in their own gallery, as well as by being involved in a host of other activities. Individual members also contribute to this process by promoting their own practice, with the result that work by Art Space artists has not only been shown nationally, but all over the world. Art Space artists have been featured in major awards, high profile exhibitions and have participated in prestigious residencies. I am always amazed by artists' abilities to invent new work and get it out there. The energy, enthusiasm and professionalism that has brought this exhibition into being is a testament to the power of artists working together to attain what are very difficult and elusive goals."
