Mandy Webb - THE MUSEUM OF THE LOSS OF PRACTICALITY + OTHER PECULARITIES University of Portsmouth Fine Art Graduate Award 2008 1st - 14th September 2008 In 2008 Art Space launched a new Fine Art Graduate Award for a promising student from the University of Portsmouth to exhibit at GASP - Gallery Art Space Portsmouth.
Mandy Webb: A collection of work driven by past comments and ignorant gestures. Originality being key but often inspired by others such as the Master of the Ready-made Marcel Duchamp, associated with irony and humour and pushing boundaries. Hugely influenced by Tracey Emin who has changed the face of the art world, and caused huge controversy in doing so. Tracey Emin once quoted "For me, being an artist isn't just about making nice things or people patting you on the back; it's some kind of communication, a message". The Pieces I create are often bright and decorative from a distance but on getting up close there is often a deeper, darker meaning or medium that has been used and some people may feel a little uncomfortable in their presence....very similar to the reaction I sometimes get when I disclose my status! I am motivated by my illness. My art has given me a new focus and a reason for living when all seemed so futile, and everyday I wake up excited about the work I am creating. I continue to liken my work to Marmite...You either love it or hate it....I just don't want it likened to being just 'Nice!!!'
