Art Space - Summer Arts Workshops 2010

 


In August 2010 a NEW series of 6 workshops have been organised by Art Space Portsmouth to take place over three weekends. All the workshops are taught by professional artists with extensive teaching experience, and will take place in well equipped and pleasant premises at Mayville High School Southsea. This will be a new initiative in the community and one which we hope to build on.

7-8th August / 10-4pm: Expressive Watercolour Painting

Explore this exciting medium, looking at a variety of techniques and approaches, working from a range of subjects the workshop will give students the confidence and skills to realise their full potential. Suitable for beginners and intermediate level.


7-8th August / 10-4pm: Monoprinting, Drawing & Collage from life*

This will be an opportunity for you to work from a life model but to extend your experience of drawing by working with monoprinting and a variety of other drawing, print and collage techniques. You will be guided to experiment, be bold, expressive or conversly minimilast in your approach. Suitable for those with some basic or advanced drawing skills.


14-15th August / 10-4pm: Drawing & Painting from Botanical Forms

"If you can paint one leaf, you can paint the world" - John Ruskin. Make careful, well observed drawings of various plants, learn about the structure and representation of often complex plant forms, using materials such as pencil, ink and watercolour. Suitable for all levels of experience from beginners to experienced artists who wish to have a greater understanding of this subject.


14-15th August / 10-4pm: 'Cliche Verre: Hand Drawn, light Printed

Cliche Verre is a technique of creating hand drawn glass negatives and conceived by the founding father of photography Henry Fox Talbot in 1839. It was made popular as a simple and direct printmaking techqnique by the French painter Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot in the 19th century. A drawing or collage is produced onto glass and a print derived by contact printing the glass negative onto a variety of photographic media. Please bring some images to work from. Suitable for all levels of experience.


28-29th August / 10-4pm: Drawing, Design and Pattern

Much of the pattern we see around us is based upon plant motifs. Learn to draw and understand Plant's structures, learn new techniques, understand repeat patterns, create a design that can be printed as a furnishing or fashion fabric. Suitable for anyone with an interest in art & design, with or without experience.


28-29th August / 10-4pm: A Weekend of Experimental Drawing

This workshop explores drawing from a variety of perspectives, challenging our notion of what drawing is. We do this by exploring a variety of media as a means of marking and tracing using light, photography, mixed media and raw materials. This will be an opportuntity for you to extend your knowledge of drawing and to experiment with new approaches. Suitable for those with some basic or advanced drawing skills. 

 

YOUR TUTORS:

  Kevin Dean: Artist and designer Kevin Dean is well known for his spontaneous and lively watercolours. An illustrator trained at The Royal College of Art, he has also designed wallpapers and textiles which have been shown in New York and Paris. He also designed much of the floral decoration for the marble floors and walls within the recently opened Grand Mosque, Abu Dhabi. An experienced lecturer he currently teaches drawing part time at Southampton Solent University, he has also acted as visiting lecturer at The Royal College of Art and Middlesex University. Kevin has given lectures at the V&A, Dulwich Picture Gallery.
     
  Katayoun Dowlatshahi: Katayoun has a wealth of experience teaching Fine Art and drawing to undergraduates and graduates at Edinburgh College of Art, The University of Sunderland, The University of Northumbria and The University of Gloucestershire. She was also the Lead Artist on a week long series of school workshops on behalf of the Jerwood Drawing Foundation in association with the Jerwood Drawing Prize in Cheltenham. She is a professional artist working in contemporary photographic art, drawing, architectural glass and time based media and frequently undertakes public art commissions across the UK.
