The starting point for many of my images is the form of microscopic cellular plank tonic organisms. Invisible to the naked eye, when magnified many thousands of times in a scanning electron microscope, the structure of these microbes is revealed as highly organised, complex and astonishingly intricate and beautiful. In the development of these organisms, each divides to give essentially a replica of itself, a result achieved by genetically controlled cellular processes, the outcome of which is entirely predictable; an individual organism. In some respect this is analogous to the more traditional techniques of printmaking which I have employed to represent the plankton. In the second phase of my work, I have used a variety of experimental techniques to overlay and progressively degrade the initial recognisable images. This, in contrast to the predictable is a far less controlled process with an unpredictable outcome; thus perhaps a metaphor for the processes of decay which overtake all living creatures after death. |
