My recent work involves the use of portraiture as the starting point of enquiry. It is an investigation through process which involves layers of pigment and other elements which are applied, moved, scraped back and manipulated.
Light is important. I like to work at different times of the day (and night). The polarities of morning light, evening dark and strong colour of the day challenge my perceptions of the developing image.
In my studio I have newspaper cuttings which document contemporary issues: books on poetry and philosophy. Current reading is "Promises, Promises" Essays on Literature and Psychoanalysis by Adam Phillips. Through the "mapping" a dialogue is set up through which questions of identity and consciousness are explored.
