The Dockyard and streets of Portsmouth were my school of art. In 1956 I started work at the age of fifteen in the Dockyard in the Captain of the Port Rigging section, run by the Navy.
It was quite daunting but they were exciting times, still building ships on the main slipway; a hive of activity. You feel you are walking in history and because of my love of drawing I always had some sketching materials which I would use in my break-times. Then, I started to take an interest in artists and war artists who worked in Portsmouth Dockyard. There were quite a few, but the main ones for me were John D Ferguson, W L Wyllie and Richard Eurich.
I took early retirement in 1996 after forty years service. I am now a full-time artist and illustrator.
