Rachel Johnston

Rachel's practice relates to themes around place and narrative. Her studio-based work involves an intense focus on material and uses textile process to construct wearable objects that are manipulated and shaped through use, reflecting the sensory and bodily experience of an environment. The concluding element of this process is the construction of large, woven pieces such as 'Subtle Increase' (2019), which aim to convey a weighty sculptural presence, capturing a moment in place and time.

The themes of place and narrative are also central to the socially engaged art projects that Rachel has been involved in over many years.  Working collaboratively with other artists and community groups, she has explored the relationship between image-making and real world experience as a starting point in understanding personal history.
