Ian Blyth

Ian graduated from Falmouth College of Arts with a BA in Photographic Communication and spent almost 20 years working as a freelance commercial photographer and film maker producing work for clients such as Zaha Hadid Architects, Camper Shoes and Ben Sherman. His work has been published in newspapers and magazines both nationally and internationally, including Vogue and The New York Times, and has been exhibited nationwide in places and spaces including the Royal Academy of Arts and the Royal West of England Academy. He is an ACE funded artist, freelance lecturer and has spoken at conferences both in the UK and the US about the curatorial process and the importance of creative education.

In 2024 after spending several years as a stay-at-home parent, he changed the direction of his practice away from commercial work to a more reflective, personal way of working which explores family relationships, societal expectations of males, the narratives that surround masculinity, and the portrayal of fathers within popular culture.

The output of Ian’s research-based practice is predominantly digital stills and video with an emphasis on a performative and self-reflective approach which is intended to challenge the viewers presumptions regarding male nudity in both technological and cultural spaces. Ian’s practice is immersed within a domestic landscape and is driven by his perception of father as artist.
