Kendal James is best known for her pixel artworks rendered in Hama Beads™, from simple pieces of jewellery at ‘pocket money’ prices to large commissioned images made from thousands of beads. She is a regular fixture at local markets and art fairs, and runs regular workshops in a variety of locations. She is also the host of the increasingly popular Doodle Club at the Wave Maiden; a monthly social event, now in its fourth year, which has helped to spark countless friendships and creative collaborations.
A key theme of many of Kendal James’ projects is community: helping to develop and support creative groups in the local area; providing opportunities to meet with a range of artists and helping new artists to gain experience.
Kendal has been a member of Art Space since her first solo show there in November 2013. More recently, her forth exhibition at GASP (and sixth in Portsmouth), an exhibition was called Lost In Time and featured an eclectic array of 80 year old Lithographic posters by artist, Lawrence Gleadle 1908-1998. Many of the posters, belonging to his son, Goff Gleadle, were in poor condition but were longing to be given new life. This show was very well received by all generations of more than 200 visitors. It was featured on BBC South Today, BBC Radio Solent, That's Solent and, on 7th February 2017: BBC 1, The One Show, tells the whole story.
The digital restoration and remastering of the original posters in this exhibition was carried out by Southsea artist, Kendal James. This has been a hugely enjoyable project that has allowed her to explore the world of vintage graphic design and marketing materials. Since this exhibition in November 2016, Kendal has ventured into a number of other photographic restoration works. Bringing new life to faded and damaged, usually sentimental images.
