About the residency

Art Space Portsmouth invites applications for the ASP International Residency 2010. The residency is aimed at emerging fine artists with some experience of professional practice who may have had limited exposure in the UK and whose work is engaged with contemporary debate within the international art world. The ASP International Residency is open to European Union Nationals as well as artists from the European Economic Area.* The award is not open to artists from the UK. Students are not eligible for the award.

The residency is non-prescriptive allowing the artist to develop work in response to their environment. The selected artist will reside in Portsmouth for a period of 3 months between September and December 2010.

The selected artist is offered:

  • Studio space for 3 months at Art Space Portsmouth
  • A research and development fee of £3000 (paid in pounds sterling)
  • A mentor from within the Art Space Portsmouth membership
  • Travel expenses (one return journey from place of origin to Portsmouth)
  • Free accommodation in Portsmouth for 3 months
  • An exhibition or event at Aspex (www.aspex.org.uk) or offsite venue
  • Material and production costs for an exhibition or event
  • The opportunity to publish online projects and blogs on the ASP website
  • Resources with ARC at Aspex including professional development and networking events
  • Use of facilities at The University of Portsmouth
  • A public presentation at Aspex

The selection process will pay particular attention to the proposed public outcomes of the residency. Collaborative work will be considered. We are looking for applicants with a good level of spoken English.

Selection is based on the following criteria:

  • The quality of the artists work
  • Evidence of professional practice within the public arena
  • The artistic merit of the proposed activity
  • The benefit to be gained by the artist
  • The benefit to be gained by ASP, its partners and the region
  • The appropriateness of the environment or location to the proposed practice
  • The proposed level of engagement with the public
  • Evidence of the ability to work independently

The programme is funded by Arts Council England and delivered in partnership with Aspex and The University of Portsmouth.

*Artists from Bulgaria and Romania may need permission from the UK border agency. ASP will assist with this and cover any additional costs.
