Christopher Neville Wood (born 1952) is a British maritime painter, printmaker, illustrator and sculptor.
At the age of 16 he studied at The Ipswich Art School, followed by Wimbledon College of Art, (now known as UAL, University of Arts London). This was followed by a two year PGCE Cert Ed Post graduate course in education at the University of Portsmouth, where he currently demonstrates drawing and image creation to animation and computer games UG students.
LIFE AND CAREER
Wood lectures in drawing and has a fine art practice, operating from studio 3 at Artspace Portsmouth.
He is primarily interested in MARITIME painting, often following the "pier head" tradition of ship portraiture, whilst his true love is the open sea. His paintings often depict fleeting light and the ever changing physical characteristics of the sea itself. From early childhood Chris' work has been informed by sailing high performance dinghies, keelboats, cruisers and a wide variety of traditional craft.
Other subject matter includes HUMAN FORM and TOPOGRAPHICAL subjects, which are painstakingly cut from lino and or boxwood and printed on an Albion Press at Omega Printmakers in Portsmouth.
In the past, he has worked in advertising, retail, publishing and education. He has taught art for over 20 years and been an academic leader both in Further and Higher Education.
A highly skilled creative draughtsman, observational drawing and traditional craft skills are the corner stones of his practice. He has a reputation for meticulous research and highly detailed work. Primarily a painter, Wood developed a passion for printmaking at art college and produces limited editions of hand pulled lino cuts and wood engravings.
Wood exhibits in the UK and is a regular contributor to solo and group exhibitions
He accepts commissions from international collectors of maritime naval engagements and or contemporary yachting.
Prices vary depending on size and medium. As a guide, while original works are available from as little as £150, commissioned oils on finest quality linen start from £2000.
