Chris Wood

BIOGRAPHY

Christopher Neville Wood (born 1952) painter, printmaker, illustrator and sculptor.

EDUCATION

At the age of 16 he studied at The Ipswich Art School, followed by Wimbledon College of Art, (now known as UAL, University of Arts London). This was followed by a two year PGCE Cert Ed Post graduate course in education at the University of Portsmouth.

LIFE AND CAREER

Wood lectures in drawing and painting, both independently and as a tutor with the Omega Art School. He has a fine art practice, operating from studio 3 at Artspace Portsmouth.

Best known for his MARITIME painting, often following the "pier head" tradition of ship portraiture, whilst his true love is the open sea. His paintings often depict fleeting light and the ever changing physical characteristics of the sea itself. From early childhood Chris' work has been informed by sailing high performance dinghies, keelboats, cruisers and a wide variety of traditional craft.
Other subject matter includes HUMAN FORM, NATURAL HISTORY & TOPOGRAPHICAL subjects, which are painstakingly cut from lino and or boxwood and printed on an Albion Press at Omega Printmakers in Portsmouth.

Previously, he has worked in advertising, retail and publishing. In addition Chris Wood taught fine art for nearly 30 years and was an academic leader both in Further and Higher Education.

A highly skilled creative draughtsman, observational drawing and traditional craft skills are the cornerstones of his practice. He has a reputation for meticulous research and highly detailed work. Primarily a painter, Wood developed a passion for printmaking at art college and produces limited editions of hand pulled lino cuts and wood engravings

More recently, over the last 4 months, he has been plein air painting every day in his tiny Portsmouth garden, recording not only the plant life but the changing seasons. The new series of 24 x 32 cm watercolours combine careful observation with abstract and expressive passages. The works vary in duration taking from 2-3 hours to complete, with other more complex studies taking 2-3 days.

Wood exhibits in the UK and is a regular contributor to solo and group exhibitions in London and the South and his native, East Coast.
