Markella Korai is a Greek contemporary artist, living and working in the UK. She studied Fine Art at Chichester University and has exhibited in the UK. Within Markella’s paintings, figuration dissolves into abstraction and back again, as the entangled active figures and energetic painterly marks collide to form a narrative that is equally fluid. The influences that inform these works are rich, from acrobats, dancers, film stills and Greek myths. These influences are not always apparent to the viewer, but the mangled traces that they leave behind create painting that are intriguing. The process of making visible in her work is driven from intuition and lyrical abstraction. Layers of colours, shapes, drawings are the elements of a strong theatricality, which is the driving force and the process itself in Markella’s work.
