Sophie Bowen
Sophie is a textile artist working with natural dyes, drawing and hand stitch. She holds a BA (Hons) Drawing from Falmouth University and an MA in Textiles from Bath Spa University.
Her practice explores stitch as a form of mark making, where line is carried through movement, repetition and touch. Working slowly and attentively with materials, she investigates how rhythm, variation and subtle shifts in density and direction can create a sense of movement and form.
Influenced by observing seasonality, its irregularities and transitions, Sophie works through an embodied process that explores experiences of change, attending to subtle shifts in attention, feeling and time. What begins as a moment of observation or response is sustained and worked through as a practice. Through hand stitch and natural dyeing, she explores how meaning can emerge gradually through accumulation, care and process-led making.
Through its tactile, hand-worked nature, the work draws attention to slowness, material engagement and the quiet significance of repeated gestures.
