Our popular 20×20 artist talks return for the autumn session. Come and join us to hear new ASP member Ian Blyth, together with Emma Collins & Olufemi Olaiya, talk about their work. We’ll use the usual Pecha Kucha format of 20 images for 20 seconds each.
We open at 6.30pm to socialise and have a drink for a 7pm start. Each presentation gives us scope to take in each artist’s practice/research with time for questions and points of discussion. We will finish by approx. 9pm.FREE Entry

Ian Blyth
Unpleasant Lands is an exploration into class, civility and belief at the intersection of ideology and passive censorship. Using a conceptual approach the project dissects the absurd fallacy of ‘indigenous Englishman’ to present an anthropological observation questioning the legitimacy of nostalgia and the reliability of the photograph as a historical document.

Emma Collins
The Snail and the Mannequin is made entirely within a domestic environment. Familiar rooms. Ordinary objects. A home that starts to feel slightly wrong the longer you look at it. Small details don’t quite sit right. Ordinary moments tip into something stranger. Its a series built on the uncanny – the home as somewhere that should be safe an known, quietly becoming unfamiliar.

Olufemi Olaiya
Olufemi is currently artist in residence at Aspex Portsmouth, developing An Odyssey of Memory: Brick, Brass, Belonging, a personal exploration of family, place and belonging. At its heart is ‘My Family House’, formerly Casa do Fernandez and later Ilojo Bar, a historic building once located in Lagos’ Tinubu Square and owned by Femi’s family. Olufemi has researched the building’s history and reconstructed it as an intricate architectural model. He is now preparing the studio for a series of photographs that reimagine the space, exploring its layers of personal and collective memory. Work produced during the residency will form part of a small exhibition at Aspex later this year.
